Why is Joe so slow on this point? Joe anyone in a simulation would have no evidence that they were NOT in a simulation, therefore they would experience life, memories, a common history with others in the simulation as if they were real beings. For argument sake, If you then take the history of the universe (which I realize could also be part of the civilization) and the number of planets with the probability of other intelligent life and then compare that to how quickly we have progressed on the technology front in the last 50 years, it would be reasonable that multiple civilizations billions of years before us, created a simulation and this went on and on for hundreds of millions of years, such that by the time we came into being there were a millions simulated worlds or every actual world. Given that, the probability that we are a simulation is far greater than the probability that we are original beings - Full disclosure, this is not my personal belief, but that is the argument being put forward
