I would like to add my 2 cents about the metro-left phenomenon, i.e., why all big cities turn into ultraleft garbage stations.
The universal phenomenon: The urban or metro population is always left leaning, no matter where it is, e.g., in continental Europe since 18th century. For the most recent French election, French leftists are mostly located in Paris metro, versus the anti-leftists in countryside of France.
The underlying reason: Could be Thomas Sowell's "Conflict of Vision". Metro people are much more dependent on establishments and various institutions, thus fall for the "Unconstrained Vision". On the other hand, country people are much more independent, thus much more likely to adopt the "Constrained Vision".
