The effect of nuclear explosions can be estimated quite precisely by scientific calculation.
Excluding radiation, the largest area affected by nuclear explision is the First-degree burn radius, which is about 60km for the 50M-ton Tsar Bomb tested by Soviet.
In other words, people outside of 60km radius of a 50M-ton H-bomb will at most suffer from First-degree burn, which will NOT result in death because healing is expected for the next 5-10 days.
In other words, if a 50M-ton bomb is dropped on Manhattan, people in Hampton, Long Island will definitely survive.
And if these people are well-prepared survivalists with radiation suits and food supply cached in underground bunkers, they should survive for indefinite time afterwards.
