  2. it's not brilliant, it's old school. If anything can be labeled 'old school', it's geometry. The next step is algebraic geometry (Descartes's versions, not the 20th C field), where we draw a parabola and look for zero crossings, or factor it into the product of 2 lines. Then pure algebra where the monomials are basis vectors in an infinite dimensional space and so on.
