  11.  @nicklasveva  gammas come after beta decay to an isomer in moderate nuclei with too many neutrons. Heavy nuclei have extra neutrons to counter all the charge repulsion, and prefer alpha decay.

After a refresher google, photons is: soft X rays: photoelectric effect, Z^4 hard X rays: Compton scattering, Z gamma rays: pair production, Z^2 A sharp theorist could tell you the origin of each power of Z. All I know is gammas: the square of the electric field strength matters.

  49.  @lajoswinkler mass does not attenuate gamma rays, at all. The neutron in lead are most of the mass and do nothing to stop gammas. The proton mass does not do crap either, rather it is the proton charge that stops them, and it goes a charge squared, so high Z elements are better. 20 pounds of lead it better then 20 pound of iron is better than 20 pounds of aluminum, and 20 pounds of lithium won’t do jack.
