this is just so wrong. Reality is far more complicated. In the strong interaction, neutrons and protons are two states of the one particle (with different iso-spin projections). With beta decay, you need the weak interaction..now you got weak hyper charge and weak isospin doublet to worry about. Then theres the miraculous Bjorken Sum Rule, relating the neutron lifetime to the difference in proton and neutron deep inelastic polarized structure functions. A neutron is not a proton and an electron.

only if you make them out of muons instead of electron. Advantage is muon-catalyzed fusion.
