  2. Radar astronomy is extraordinary: astronomy where you illuminate the target? what! The observation of the asteroid with 10 meter (ish) pixels scales to taking an IR laser in Los Angeles, shining it on a golf cart (or Mars rover) in New York and seeing details the size of a nickel.

  3. it's called "Litho breaking". Terra is for earth. Mars is "Aeros" (e.g., its geoid is called "the aeroid"), so it sounds too much like air for braking. Anyway, I had heard there was a torque from radiation pressure on the space craft, which they corrected with thruster burns. I guess the torque part worked, but the thruster was interpreted incorrectly, and the S/C got off course. No one was sure what's up, and no one said, "let's check the units" (I always check the units)...so they did a TCM 4. (1,2,3 occur leaving earth, 4,5,6 are on the mars end), several engineers noticed a problem, and suggested a TCM5 fix, but upper managment nixed it. They watched it go behind mars and waited in vain for it to pop out the other side: crushing.

  6. Lockheed-Martin delivered numbers in pound-force-seconds (which sounds IMperial to me, but also US). JPL read newton-seconds, and then they failed to fix it. But I've seen momentum wheel experts doing torque in ounce-inches. wtf?

  10. no. It did do some radar astronomy. It also broadcast the famed "Arecibo Message", but no one has replied.....yet. I guess is too late to get a call back? Also it has limited declination range (-1 to +38 deg, maybe?)
