- Actually, conservatism is something that exists everywhere. Political philosophy exists on a spectrum and part of that spectrum is more traditional and less inclined to changes in the basic fabric of a government. It’s certainly true that there are variations in specifics when labeling “conservatism.” The Mullahs in Iran and the communist party of China could generically be called conservative but, in America conservatism is generally understood to define a belief in limited republican (small “r”) government, less taxation and regulation, and adherence to traditional standards of moral behavior. The fact that merely wanting less government intrusion in the economy is similar to the 1870’s is hardly an accurate comparison to modern conservatives — the old progressive complaint that conservatives are “reactionary counter-revolutionaries.” There are many reasons that American minorities are more allied to “liberal” thought today. One is that a complex of powerful and influential institutions (media, education, etc.) have successfully branded any opposition to leftist policy as “racist” or “oppressive.” The fact remains, contemporary conservatives — like myself — largely welcome anyone who shares our belief in limited government with stabilizing traditional social values.

Lefties will always make a big point regarding the few minorities among conservatives. It’s a stupid point because no one among conservatives is rejecting them. The choice to be allied with conservatism is made by individuals, not a party or worldview. The Republicans are definitely gaining increased support among “minorities” (non-white citizens). I’m really glad to have guys like this on our side. To most conservatives, race is simply not an issue.
