I disagree slightly. I think he's not realised that previously television and radio are pre-programmed feeds, and this agency is exclusive to us and readers of books. Now we can find out if something is true or not, no longer reliant on a single news source. The desire to control the information feed is the reason for many of the algorithmic changes. In fact, politics is in many ways healthier than ever, but for the longest time nobody needed to think, and so we're collectively out of practice. Many seek the reassurance of that single unified narrative that no longer exists, and I posit should not have ever existed, and the beginning of the breakdown of fixed political affiliations. The dominant side forgot it had to and how to argue its case, but that will change eventually. Don't be too pessimistic.

We didn't exist in the TV generation, you thought what you were told to think about even worse than an algorithm that at least loosely fixates on your interests. That people can care about things other than that reported in a newspaper or on tv is astounding, and yes, we don't want to lose it again. Before TV and radio, our ideas were collected by local social interaction. What we have in the internet age is new, scary for some, and we are weaning many that had the comfort blanket from it, A recomendation instroduces them gently to the idea of control, those scared of it never engaged before. That few % are the same % that used the internet for ourselves in the first place, but it suits few people.

I use grayjay for watching youtube and purely use subscriptions on it. It has a better search able to search other platforms. I only open youtube to comment and its frustratingly hard to find the video I want despite matched subscriptions. Certainly I won't appear on your statistics despite always using a subscriptions feed. Bluesky and mastodon were pushed and adopted by the most politically agressive algorithm-thinkers. We call them NPCs because their opinions are as predictable as an NPC in a videogame, only able to parrot the opinion they have been fed and having never heard a counter argument. You have a youtube audience, and youtube viewers are driven by productive disagreements in the comments, very different to the people you are referring to.

Grayjay you can default youtube to subscriptions and it can hold other video sites videos in one place

Youtube refused to do that for me, deciding I needed to receive their paid for local media slots, so i watch youtube on grayjay now as the friction was too high doing that.
