Idk where these people live. Here in America, the only in-demand jobs are found in the “grey zone” of skill sets (middle tier work). Yes, there are some jobs are very nepotistic (I.e.: elevator technicians), but there are other middle level jobs that are out there, in great demand, but nobody knows about them. For example, America recently had a bunch of structural failures in her bridges, railways and roadways. Does anyone think of a career in maintaining such infrastructure? I can easily make a few from community college: Highway technician, land surveyor, civil engineering technician, engineering aide, and geological technician!! Those are good fields to study, but nobody wants them!

Same here. Never understood how parents could pressure/shame their child into doing a degree that has little to no employments prospects, high student loan debt, and why make such a massive gamble for several years ahead of your future?

Depending on what region you live in, there are only a certain amount of engineers and lawyers that are needed. If there is excess, then you won’t find a job unless you’re willing to work self-employed. Likewise, the same can be said with apprenticeships. Only a certain number of apprentices will get accepted based on the needs of a local economy. If there is downturn, then the guys with the least experience get laid off while the journeyman’s and master tradesmen with the most years of experience are kept. You have to do your own critical thinking and careful research before making any gambles.

@turtle522 Good for your son and his friends. If you can get into an exclusive field, then you can earn a lot of money. But that is the problem with exclusive fields; only a limited few can go into such fields. We still need "average people" to do all the other important work that society requires.

@Bob5573able Yes and no. That really depends… In America, you can become an engineer by education and/or experience. You also don’t need need a degree to work as an automotive mechanic; it’s just whatever work experience you can get. Your list sounds like a standard office job for commercial services. It’s not something I’d always recommend for a techno-industrial field.

@Bob5573able Thanks for your background story. I’m in my 30s and work as a plumber. My first employer that was willing to take me on as an apprentice, only did so because I had related work experience. I had my own basic plumbing tools, personal vehicle, and I worked as a “handyman” doing various outdoor jobs in my teenage years. So he knew he could count on me as a first year plumbing apprentice.

@mrbanditos3583 Deregulation? Seems to me that you’ve never heard of the Dodge brothers and their story in creating a successful truck manufacturing business and helping Ford rise to the top. The Dodge brothers started as apprentice machinists, worked towards becoming master machinists being able to repair/build/maintain anything mechanical, before starting a successful automotive venture; engineering their own cars/trucks.

@mrbanditos3583 In the present time line, the American empire is in rapid decline and decay. With such rot, we see all sorts of absurdities that we see in other rotting empires throughout history. Also, what we see today in “vocational training” is a strange anomaly in all of American and European history. At the end of the day, it’s up to the individual to figure out how they’re gonna pursue their career goals in life…

@pamelqtaylor8335 Wow!!! That is amazing! Thank you for sharing your story! I’ve talked to retired folks (boomers) who worked in aerospace and automotive manufacturing as a career. They tell me the same story as you do! Despite a desperate need for highly trained machinists and industrial electricians; nobody has the patience to do an apprenticeship. Even back in the 60s, it was frowned upon for a young person to do a skilled trade or some sort of vocational training at community college. It was “college, college, and graduate school at the way!”

Many fields are over saturated, but people still keep going into them. For example, 25 years ago, biology degrees in the USA were already over saturated, yet folks still go for bachelor of biology degrees in droves. Your better off doing something “biology related” at community college or doing a combined community college and state college pathway to save time, money and increase your employment prospects.
