Both white collar and blue collar professions out there are in the grey zones. It all depends, but yeah, you should’ve figured some sort of self-employment or small shop sub-contracting work with your skill sets.

That is a similar pathway to how I got started. I went to community college and studied HVAC controls. Worked as a service technician for a while and then transitioned to an electrician apprenticeship. Now I have my journeyman electrician license doing fire alarms and controls.

@marcusmoonstein242 Thank you! I've thought about going doing a business, but I think I'm gonna need a few more years. Up here in Canada, we need our masters license to work as a contractor with multiple employees. Aside from my full time job, I do side hustles on weekends at various job sites. Very good on you! I can imagine the good money you're earning!

There a lot of older guys out there who won’t teach a younger apprentice anything because they think it’ll bring them “job security”, when in reality, it won’t. You’re just dragging the whole company down, slugging things down and making the overall job worse on your part.

I had that experience, and let me tell you, I’d quit after several months or a year and move on to a new job. No point in wasting your time with idiots who “don’t teach so they can have job security” type of mentality bullshit. There are many other good opportunities out there for you to learn new things. I found that small shop is a great way to go, because you’re required to learn and do as much as possible.

Most unions and contractors won’t even take on an older guy such as you for work. You no longer have the physical strength or mental ability to tackle such trade work anymore. The best you’d do is minimum wage as a unskilled installer.

@Homeinmygardenwithmydog Try non-union buddy, your odds are better there than union for someone that old.

@Homeinmygardenwithmydog I wasn't referring to you, Lol. Just throwing that out there for anyone who wanted to know based on what I've seen/experienced while on the job site. I'm around the same the age as you are; working as a master plumber and managing a few journeyman plumbers and apprentices.
