There were little to no zoning codes back in the 1940s... These days, if people tried to grow a garden in their front yard; they'd get arrested or fined! Many locals in other states constantly fight the enforcement of very absurd zoning laws that make it illegal to do anything productive in your community!! How can anyone use public transit in car dependent suburbia??! There is NO SUCH THING AS PUBLIC TRANSIT OUTSIDE THE BIG U.S CITIES OF NEW YORK OR CHICAGO!!! America no longer caters to the middle class or working class folk. America caters to anyone with Big $$$; regardless of wall street investor or a king pin (drug dealer) who encourages teens to take heroin. Unlike the modern software industry (which is exclusive, and discriminates against many). The manufacturing industry that America had was more inclusive and offered more economic opportunities to ordinary folk. On top of that, big business no longer feels a sense of cultural connection to the ordinary people. Yes, John D. Rockefeller was a snob at times, but he built many institutions, public parks, opera houses, monuments etc. and gave it to the ordinary folk. Unlike present day big businessmen; they feel no obligation to the ordinary folk, other than a meager pay packet every month.
