Japan would have lost either way. China had no willingness to surrender no matter how bad or how terrible things got. In a protected war involving endurance, the Japanese would have lost. Japan did not have the manpower, the will, or the resources to keep such a lengthy war going. The Second Sino Japanese is in (many ways) the same as the Pacific campaign waged by the US. It’s one thing to attack and take territory, but it is a whole other issue with holding what territory you’ve gained.

Despite the US selling oil and other raw material to Japan in the 1930s, the Japanese still had a terrible time in China due to logistics. Japan merchant marine fleet was small in terms of tonnage, and greatly over worked to the breaking point while waging the second Sino-Japanese war. Japan entry into the pacific only destroyed their merchant marine fleet. Aside from China greatly lagging behind in science, technology and industry. China had no modern infrastructure beyond Shanghai and TianJin. So the more the Japanese went inland, the more they realized just how awful it would be re-supply its own troops.
