Did you drive a 2006 Chevy suburban? Or was that another car brand? For many newer cars, the engine pistons and piston rings are so thin/light that it only takes a little bit of bad oil to ruin the whole engine.

The same thing happened to my Chevy Equinox. I went for oil changes every 7k miles and started noticing excessive engine kicking noises. Changed the oil immediately and started changing the oil every 2k miles from then on. Never had that knocking issue since.

@koomo801 Wow, I did not know that!! Thank you for letting me know! I’ve read articles of SUVs and pickup trucks burning a lot of engine oil after total vehicle mileage is more than 70k miles. My Equinox has 45k miles on it.

@BeefNEggs057 Holy cow! That’s crazy! Thank you for letting me know! GM is what I would describe as a “grey zone” where some of their cars are great but others are god awful designs.

@koomo801 I use Mobil 1 full synthetic engine oil for my Chevy Equinox. No matter what it says; I change the oil every 2k-3k miles just to be on the safe side. Yes, you are correct about the battery issue of most modern cars. I get the battery checked quite often and if there is the slightest problem; I get the battery changed out right away. I don’t know about the “lower maintenance” for newer cars. My Equinox started to show some structure rust after two years of driving; so I got rust protection paint for my Equinox. I drove a 2001 Saturn LS2000 sedan for 10 years and there was hardly any structure rust after 10+ years of driving.

@jeffhill3681 Yep, that was me as an 18 year old. After I got my driver license and started using my parents car (2016 GMC Terrian) for road trips with friends. I started noticing the engine would get rough every time I started up the car. I didn’t know what the problem could be, so I started doing online research and learned to change engine oil and engine air filter very often to keep the engine running properly.

I find it amazing how Japanese and German cars have strong engines; meaning you can run the engine to 60k miles without an oil change before the engine is destroyed. Meanwhile for GM cars, you start experiencing terrible engine knocking when you don’t do proper oil changes every 3k miles. However, GM has a built in oil analysis indicator (computer system) that gives relatively accurate readings for the engine oil. I find the contrasts and extremes to be absolutely wild!
