I finished an associate degree in electromechanical engineering technology - specializing in automation and controls. Before graduation, I applied to 20 different companies (small, medium and large), got a dozen responses for an interview, and then after two weeks of scheduled interviews; 7 of the companies that interviewed me offered me a full time job as an engineering technician. I didn’t think much of it at that time, but later on realized that the reason why multiple, different contractors were willing to take me on (even without work experience) is because of severe labor shortages in certain technical fields and many managers were desperate to hire anyone with some background in automation/controls. I see most of my friends having done a degree in a field that is highly competitive or over saturated or is in the process of being offshored and even replaced by AI. I believe that is where the main problem lies.
