Just curious, what did you study in your blue collar vocation? Maybe you could try self-employment?

I love how all these parents and young people are now considering “apprenticeships” instead of 4 year and graduate degrees… I work as a journeyman construction electrician and it seems to me that most people don’t know what working in a skilled trade is really about. You don’t just show up and have someone else do this or that for you. Working in the skilled trade takes a lot of discipline, you have to attend night school after x amount of work experience, work on a job site is fast paced and you need to know how to balance theoretical skills with hands on ability. I’ve seen many first year apprentices get fired because they don’t have the physical stamina to keep up or they’ve never used a screwdriver before and aren’t willing to learn anything that is challenging.

STEM degrees are in the grey zone now. It all depends on what kind of social connections you’re able to acquire in high school or university. If you study engineering, there is no guarantee of you finding stable employment without prior (related) work experience or connections to help you out in this economy.

Internships and Cooperative education are limited while also being highly competitive. One of my buddies studying commerce at university told me that there are only 300 internships and Co-op positions available, while there are 900 students competing for it. Literally, you’re competing with 2 other people for one internship position…

If you studied a four year or graduate school biology or chemistry degree, then yes, you’re screwed. There are only so many labs, chemical plants, industrial sites, and teaching positions that you can apply for. We no longer live in times of 1920s/50s economic booms.

@sabinekoch3448 It's not just young people in Gen Z with poor work ethics or misperceptions of work. I see a lot of older folks constantly trying to increase their compensation while reducing their accountability. Snowflakes come from the clouds, and the clouds of the older folks (parents) who terribly failed their own children.
