That meeting in the Trump Tower was apparently about the Magnitsky Act and sanctions. It was with Natalia Veselnitskaya, a Russian attorney, who represented Denis Katsyv, a Russian real-estate businessman, who had been sued by Preet Bharara, a US Manhattan attorney on charges of money laundering relating to US fund manager, Bill Browder, who operated his funds out of Moscow. Preet Bharara is a known Democrat, Hillary Clinton supporter and Trump hater, although MSM bios of him state he is non-partisan. Natalia Veselnitskaya was in the US, representing her client, Katsyv in court.
Firstly, I am sure many individuals with agendas meet presidential candidates all the time. Perhaps someone could tell me if I am wrong about this, or if it is illegal. Obviously, the Trump group had no power to repeal the Magnitsky Act at the time (and it was not repealed after Trump became president). Veselnitskaya had no dirt on Clinton. All round no harm done.
Natalia Veselnitskaya has said she never had any dirt on Clinton. She met with the Trump group strictly in relation to the Magnitsky Act. Democrats accused her of acting on behalf of Putin. That is false. She simply advocated for the revocation of the Magnitsky Act, which imposed sanctions against individuals named by Bill Browder in an alleged Russian tax scam against him, resulting in the "theft" of $230 million from Browder. Magnitsky was his "lawyer," who died in a Russian prison.
In response to the Magnitsky Act, Russia stopped the US from adopting Russian children. If I remember correctly, at the time there was a scandal about an American couple returning an adopted Russian child.
Here's the meat of the concerns about the Magnitsky Act. A very convincing case has been brought forward alleging that Browder is actually the one who stole the funds in a complex scheme. One just has to watch the video of Browder being deposed to come away with serious questions about Browder's accusations.
Magnitsky was not a lawyer, as Browder claimed, but an accountant.
