  8.  @jackodknight  I ignored it because it is a false claim. National food is tied to identity and not about how many people in the country like to eat it. No one is saying, Israelis should not eat falafel or Hummus. It's calling it "national cuisine" that's shameful. Pizza is one of the most popular types of fast food in the US but it is not part of "national cuisine". Pizza even though in the US alone it has dozens of styles but it's part of the Italian cuisine and their national food. About falafel an Israeli said " a testament to Israel's rich tapestry of culinery influences and its ability to transform immigrant foods into national SYMBOLS" At the same time compare it with European Jews of 1930 " shunning falafel as alien dish" and " in 1984 falafel was still far from being accepted as a Jewish, much less "national" food". He goes on to say " However, it allowed falafel to shed its associations with the Arab peoples. This was something the Israeli government was glad to encourage..and so closely identified with the Israeli state" ( Lee 2018). The author of Food of Israel even went as far as claiming it was a "biblical food" 🤣 He must've thought God gave him falafel and hummus to go with the land. "Politically, Zionists ignored the Arabs but culturally , they romanticized and tried to imitate them" Zerubavel, scholar of Israeli culture. The Israeli song of 1958, "only we have falafel, because this is the national food of Israel" "It is a total appropriation and that is linked to very concrete things like land and sustenance" Mr. Alcalay , Jewish professor "Israelis love to think that falafel is their own" Ms.Agmon
