I wonder could you ask if Russians value freedom and democracy and follow up with asking if they believe there is freedom and democracy in Russia. I struggle to understand what Russians really value - is it just material things? What really matters to them? Trying not to be judgemental, I just want to understand.

@nekozaemon3803 it doesn't help to disparage the Russian people. We just need to find a way to communicate with them and try to understand what they are up against. Putin has crushed their will to resist - you need to understand who is really at fault in this situation.

@nekozaemon3803 exactly - they have been indoctrinated by Putin and the fault lies with him. They live like in a police state, isolated from information, unable to think independently. Please direct your anger at Putin, not at the Russian people. We can only try to get through to them by understanding how they got to be this way. People can change. The Germans changed completely after Hitler was gone so I know it's possible.

@kathcasey2090 I also wonder about that. It's hard to wrap my head around their complacency about it. I've been a poll worker for 15 years (sort of a civic duty thing) and to me liberty and democracy are worth fighting for no matter what the cost. It's just how I was brought up.

Not many strong opinions. They know they can't influence the government so it's almost like a coping mechanism to disengage from politics and avoid getting into trouble. I could never live like that but I grew up in a free world where I can protest, influence, and have my vote count for something.

@strawberryhaze8836 we left Vietnam and Afghanistan under public pressure, legalized pot,

The list of changes resulting from public opinion is huge. We vote for people who share our views. Our politicians pay attention to protest.

@kathcasey2090 I've lived in California my whole life. My ancestors escaped from Eastern Europe and Russia between 1880 and 1945. My mother was the last to get out when Stalin's cruelty became evident. (Yes I am an old guy). It's interesting nobody ever told me to value freedom and democracy

@kathcasey2090 oops, didn't finish. Meant to say I just absorbed those values by living in America
