Sator made a deal with the future that they'd make him a billionaire if he destroys the present. The Protagonist is the one that created Tenet in the future. They were on the boats because Protagonist knew where the final piece of the algorithm was. Your biggest complaint about the movie is you're not smart enough to grasp it
