  2. The american civil war was actual6 a massive own goal by the south. Prior to this, slavery was a state issue. They then decided with typical southern arrogance that it should approved at a federal scale, and managed to convince ever6one that there should be one rule, but not that it should be theirs. The problem was no-one could figure out how to pay for abolishing it, so it was going nowhere fast. Then the south split over other issues, so he signed the abolishing proclamation due to the cost in the north being trivial. Then the south lost the war, and under jim crow tried to retain slavery under different rules so it technically was not covered by the law.
