it is the nature of epic storytelling that if you travel to lots of places, you need maps, and if it covers a long time you need timelines of events, technology and other major aspects. otherwise the author cannot keep it consistent. as the work gets bigger, it is useful for the reader to have access to this material as well. when you say that you don't like books with maps, you are really saying that you don't like big complex stories.
