I'm really not sure why Musk or anyone thinks a subset of humans living in domes on a planet with a fraction of earth's gravity is a remotely desirable idea. put o'neil cylinders with the appropriate size and spin gravity in mars's orbit (or anywhere else feasible we could reach, I suppose) and leave the long term operation in alternative gravities to our machines.
