people still like doing the same thing all their friends are doing, which can actually be a good thing but it gets co-opted for various reasons. the only real "anti-social" (more like private, not ad-driven) app is Signal as far as I'm concerned. Send messages to your friends, that's it.

@Anedoje if I'm understanding you right, I just want you to know you don't have to pay to get a good ad blocker unless you're a nice person who donates

@edenassos it's not about one particular individual, it's about what powerful people can do when they can get real-time updates on what giant segments of the population are doing. Is it OK with you if people express that on another platform that's contributing to that problem?

abusing common people for his own wealth, yup.

@edenassos ...who said anything about urban efficiency? that's one potential use but it's not the primary or most common one, and not everyone who has their data collected is in an urban environment. The advertising industry is built on the mass gathering of data and manipulation of human psychology, using data to predict a person's income, demographics, and spending habits. People who were paying attention to this as the shift was happening were reassured that more data would help connect people with the things they really needed most effectively, but the reality is less utopian. people can be charged different prices based on what kind of person their ad profile thinks they are. people can be served ads for things they don't need but are prone to buying anyway. advertisers can request that ads for things like homes and apartments only be shown to people belonging to specific age/sex/racial groups. The ads that pay website owners the most are outright scams or malware. this is more of a personal opinion but I think it's an agreeable enough one. all this data about people is generating a lot of income for some people, and the people generating all that data give it away for free without realizing what it's worth. if it's all going to be collected anyway I think users deserve a cut.
