@0x6a09 "they'll do it anyway, better let corpos take open source code with no obligations" this is like leaving your door unlocked because the axe-wielding maniac is just going to break a window anyway. maybe he has good intentions?

@chrimony tell that to minix and the Intel management engine. I'm sure AMD's PSP runs something with a similarly permissive license

@ licensing doesn't influence code quality. code quality influences code quality.

@Wkaelx overspecialization with a shiny new toy seems like it has the potential for downsides. when farmers do that it's called a monoculture and those tend to be wiped out all at once when the right blight comes along

Linux Mint is right there if you want Ubuntu minus Canonical

probably the only way to stop your code from being used in something evil is to keep it off the internet. that said, it's probably better to give yourself the option of legal recourse in case a weak enough organization violates your terms. there's a reason people (used to?) call permissive licenses cuck licenses.

@mmstick "how does that affect you" is something people tend to say when the negative consequences for changing something are still over the horizon. everything having a permissive license enabling more embrace, extend, extinguish campaigns to be carried out by software corporations DOES affect me, massively. But since nothing dramatic has happened in the present moment certain kinds of people will act incredulous at someone's preference for firm copyleft.

@mmstick stop abusing the term conspiracy theory. it's called a prediction. the tinfoil hats are not converging on your location, you can just breathe and discuss things dispassionately. anyway, putting aside you (knowingly?) asking for sources on a platform that deletes replies with links I don't even subscribe to the frame you're putting me into in your comment. Permissive licenses are bad for users because of strategies like embrace, extend, extinguish (do I really have to explain to you what this is? it's older than many adults now) as well as projects like minix being used as the basis for IME. nothing I've mentioned is a conspiracy theory, one is a business practice that can be observed in the world and the other is a piece of software used by state intelligence. do you dispute any of what I've said?

@SenileOtaku of course they are, same as when they were flashing their CoCs everywhere

@astralfoxy1787 "safe" 😒

@CoastalAkkcess if you want a *buntu is there even a reason to use ubuntu over mint anymore?

@zebculture839 rust zoomers acting mad salty if someone doesn't like their language as always

@Wkaelx the problem is people who can't anticipate trends. gee, what do you suppose could happen if a rabidly evangelistic community of software developers got one major distro to adopt their permissive coreutils replacement?

@lennymclennington that sounds good to me
