@MrBottlecapBill this level of pessimism about knowledge is unwarranted. Think of mathematical proofs. We knew 2+2=4 as soon as we figured out how to count natural numbers, and the formal proof verifying it to be true came much, much later. This should tell us quite a bit about the role of intuition.

@ADobbin1 I watched the Vsauce video where he wastes half an hour saying there are no chairs because there are no chair atoms or something like that. eventually he brings it back around to "there are atoms arranged chairwise" which...yeah. everyone already knew chairs are made of some pre-existing material shaped by a person into a chair. it really is just sophistry and word games.

@mkklassicmk3895 if it's just something we made up, how did animals reproduce before we coined the terms for male and female? sorry bluehair, there is an external reality and it has male and female beings,no matter how disagreeable you find it.

@mkklassicmk3895 "entirely made up" only makes sense if you're referring to something prescriptive, but biological sex is descriptive. we observed something that wasn't a product of human artifice (unless you think Yakub made male and female animals in a lab to trick you I guess) and assigned words to that external reality.
