people have such a heavy bias towards assuming everything is fine and we're nowhere near the possibility of anything bad happening, it can be eye-opening. everything is fine, there are no flagrant errors in our thinking, nothing about our culture or science needs to be re-examined from a different angle except that which the Proper Authorities™ are already working on. like hell.

@kw8274 the top comment is conflating computers with AI. A big computer doesn't automatically have the capacity to get bored, it needs an AI that has boredom programmed in for that. computers running simulations don't have the ability to get bored unless somebody programs that in. it's easier to make a computer that doesn't have any concept of boredom whatsoever. that's why I mentioned size because it seems like people think a big computer automatically has AI.

@logandunlap9156 do they trust "everything" but the government, or do they all pick an alternative that makes sense to them? and is there maybe bell curve of intelligence across a group that large?

@kw8274 the computer in your house can run simulations, you do that every time you play minecraft. it doesn't need to be sentient to do that even if it's physically larger than earth, it's just a big computer.

hang on, I think I did my calculations wrong. In one column I have "build the basilisk, make the basilisk happy" and in the other half I have "build the basilisk, lose eternal reward in heaven, make Pascal and both prisoners unhappy" can somebody check my math?
