Underrated comment, OP. Semi-related example, Destiny actually did something similar to this sans a discrete macguffin with Uldren Sov. He was corrupted by visiting a magical location, and that was further exacerbated by a wish-granting creature who was trapped by his sister who he is utterly devoted to, which appeared to him as said sister and preyed on his desire to please her. Those factors combined with some emotional instability corrupted him to the point he lead a prison break and killed Cayde-6, a fan favorite character, when normally he would have had an interest in keeping the prison running and would have had no reason to kill Cayde.
