  1. in principle I believe paying for stuff you want is a good alternative to being the product, but if all my searches would be tied to my real-world payment info, it seems harder for it to be private, and the "we don't track you" promises are only promises, they can't actually be enforced. It's like when VPNs claim to be zero-log.
