same happened to me too! I got very attached to women I knew who were good friends but weren't good matches romantically, and then had a weird run-in with a stranger who showed interest but just wanted money. after that I gave up on dating and spent that time writing and hanging with friends instead. my future long term GF was drawn to me because of how I acted when I wasn't in "desperately trying to hold your attention" mode and I've been with her for years.
