I take it as being more about not ignoring or refusing opportunity when it comes. people who are stuck in a rut tend to not take life seriously enough to grab a weird or unexpected chance to do something because they're too accustomed to nothing happening. The takeaway is: weird opportunities will present themselves for you to use your talents, and at some point one will be an emergency. Learn and practice as much as you can in the areas of expertise you've chosen to focus on to increase your odds of success. "as much as you can" doesn't have to mean frantically studying like a med student, but it does mean don't slack off too much.
