it's like finding out the huge pile of work you thought you had to do is mostly not your responsibility. It still affects you to some degree, but the actual amount of work/things you have to worry about is a fraction of what you thought it was.

you're missing the point you should still do whatever it is you need to do, because that's the only way you have a chance to get the outcome you want. the point is you can raise your odds, sometimes to 99%, but never 100%. hard work is still necessary but the point is to understand life always has an element of uncertainty, so don't let yourself get caught off guard when you get a reminder that you don't have absolute control.

this would be good to ask on stream or post to the subreddit, I'd like to see what his answer would be if you can't rely on institutions. someone I know gave up on her doctor because despite having access to this person's medical records they still act like my friend is unhealthy because of bad habits and not the hormonal imbalance that's on her freaking chart

I think the point he's getting at is that you have influence but not total control. I could train to become a pro athlete and do everything right but through no fault of my own get run off the road by a drunk driver and become paralyzed, for example. the possibility of failure isn't a reason to not make an attempt, though. if you don't try the chance of not getting it rises to 100% trying to do things is about RAISING your odds but you have to accept that there's always a chance of failure. just a chance though, not a certainty does that make more sense?
