@pdaahunchoisnextup sympathy for someone's negative experiences is generally a small comfort, yes. we're social animals, don't be a wet blanket especially if you're just here to say "duhhh that doesn't help" and not outdo the other person.

overall I had a good childhood, but one thing that stands out as distinctly better is my relationship with my parents. They were not happy being married to each other, they had false beliefs about the world, they weren't total deadbeat fuckups but they didn't always know what they were doing. they've been divorced for about 10 years now and while that process hurt like hell for the kids, they've grown as people and being an adult myself now I'm more confident and on more equal footing with them. they're nicer to talk to and spend time with, and they've even stopped bitching about each other. Definitely nicer than childhood in that regard.
