it sounds like he's blowing too much money on it from the way OP phrased it, but I agree. I'm in favor of growing produce at home and it sounds like his dad's habit could easily be made into something constructive.

@Bendilin I think there's an element of truth to this, assuming the garden is productive and people in the house are willing to eat the produce. OP may have bad habits he's not aware of or omitted from the reddit post, but for the sake of being charitable it's not impossible that the dad is a middling farmer, or is wasting some of the money by either following bad instructions or buying flashy but unhelpful products, or there are losses to blight/pests, etc. etc. Plus there's the issue of at least 2/4 people in the household being overweight, one living exclusively on junk. I could go on but based on my experiences knowing a family like this (but with the politics being a mirror image of OP's, amusingly) it's probably more complicated than what could fit in a reddit post.

Sorry about your story. My girlfriend (who as it happens I met online and has ASD) has a mother who has similar issues with men and is verbally abusive when she drinks, so I understand the feeling. I hope the work visa process goes well. In my experience you may get some (possibly grudging) respect when you can prove to your mother that the person you've been seeing is a real woman who is actually interested in you. However, it's not necessary if you plan on cutting contact with her, that's just a tip if you want to try winning her over.
