Yes later they became kinda a weird gentlemans club , but the secret rites make way more sense withthat it were literal masons that did so generally formed a guild of masons that was protective of trade secrets too, because trade secrets and industrial espionage was already a thing. So its weird and ssecritive because it was done to filter out spieds and people that they dont want in on trade secrets. Later it was just fun tradition. Maybe they felt more open there and that helped too? Its really nothing mystical. :P
