Taking land for swaps during peace negotiations is a smart move. The Ukrainians should be aiming to take as much easily obtainable land as possible for precisely this reason. Go forward only as far as is easy to take, then create another front in the next easy to take location. Think about it, why would Russia be willing to make peace if the only nation losing land is Ukraine? This is the perfect way to put pressure on Russia.

They still have a fairly strong military on paper (caveats below). But like the US in Vietnam, for a nation to win the war there needs to be the political will to do so from the people, not just the leader. What this has shown is three things. One, Putin's attack on Ukraine didn't have the popular support at home that he thought it did. Two, There are a heck of a lot of gaps in Russia's military "strength". Particularly corruption and the weakness of it's logistics systems. Their fire control and optics are not great, and the willingness of Russian or should I more accurately say Soviet (as these are mostly pre 1990 tanks) tank designers to sacrifice crews for easier tank design. The fact they're fighting a nation that has used their equipment for decades and knows all of the weakness of it certainly doesn't help, either. Three, drone warfare has changed everything. Everything. It's at least as big a shakeup to warfare as the Mark V tank was in 1916.
