  1. By the time the P-51 was introduced to the RAF (1942) there was no threat of invasion and effectively the tide had turned in the battle for Europe. The question should really be between the Spitfire and the Hurricane. You could also compare the Beaufighter, or maybe the Mosquito. Given the Hurricane got more kills until the end of the Battle of Britain than the Spitfire, then went on to become a fighter bomber, and a close air support tank destroyer in the North Africa campaign it seems an easy decision for me. Hawker Hurricane is the winner yet not even listed as an option. You could argue the Beaufighter even outranks the Spitfire given how effective it was in shooting down German pilots whilst defending Allied bombers with it's excellent long range night fighter capabilities augmented with radar.
