The problem there is as part of the overall war effort, Australia's efforts in New Guinea and defending it's own land meant little to Churchill. Just like India defending itself and even pushing the Japanese out of Burma meant little to him. Churchill would have been prepared to sacrifice all of Australia and India, Canada and New Zealand just to make the UK people's lives a little better. It took great courage for Curtin to stand against Churchill and defend his own homeland. Churchill was a formidable man, but so one eyed in his focus that he wasn't as great a leader as he is viewed by others (as we also saw in WW1). In many ways he singlehandedly created the collapse of Empire post WW2 due to his actions during it.

@nedkelly9688 7th division did most of the heavy work, but if the 39th and to a lesser degree the 53rd weren't there then the 7th division would have got there far too late to save Port Moresby and the whole of New Guinea. Timing is everything sometimes, and the bravery of the 39th was the difference between Australia holding New Guinea and losing it.

@commando4481 did I say I would have preferred it? Also, you are talking about Churchill sending A division to defend British Singapore as if that was Churchill doing Australia a favour? IT WAS TO DEFEND SINGAPORE WHICH WAS BRITISH! Meanwhile, Australia sent the 6th 7th and 9th divisions to serve BRITISH interests in the European and North African arena, and the 8th division to defend BRITISH interests in Malaya and Singapore.
