But most of the nations around that area are basically stuck with similar problems - borders decided by the peace treaty lines of long ago wars, meaning that significant communities are split up. Do you think that a Pashtun state would be welcomed by Pakistan, who would have to surrender a large chunk of it's land and population to it, either on formation of a Pashtun state, or after decades of civil war? Nor are the Kurds going to get a homeland in on the lands of northern Iraq and south eastern Turkey. Iraq won't be taking eastern Syria in compensation, nor the lands of south western Iran that should in theory belong to it based on language and religious background. Then we have the Armenians. The Turkmens. The Georgians. The Uzbeks, the Baluch, the Tajiks, the Azeris and so on and so forth. With every valley basically a different nationality it's not an easy fix. Even if you could get agreement to move people back to a centralized homeland, the efforts to do so thus far - between Greece and Turkey, between India and Pakistan, between Israel Palestine and Jordan have all created genocide.

  2. ​ @ibnu9969  not really, the Pashtun peoples are as stated a contiguous population of 60 million people. Certainly big enough to be an effective nation in their own right. The Kurds are likewise similarly populous and wealthy enough to have their own nation, although that's a far more complex topic as it deals with major military powers having their lands chopped up, and outside the scope of Afghanistan, but it shows why these things are so hard to deal with. Honestly the world would be a better place now for everybody if on the completion of the invasion of Afghanistan there were treaties done with each neighboring nation to hand large chunks of land over by ethnicity and merge say the Pashtuns into Pakistan, the Tajiks portion into Tajikistan, and the Uzbeks into Uzbekistan, at least where borders allowed. Some correction of borders within those nations could have occurred too, potentially. You can usually extract some concessions when giving people a big chunk of land and resources. So long as everyone gained land and population and homoginity out of it, and a bit of cash bribing, it could have defused a global hotspot and drastically improved quality of life. There would have HAD TO be smaller nations created needing ongoing protection, like for the Hazara, and the Aimaq. How you handle that just means you end up with a smaller mess to deal with as far as land area and population.
