@Maxamush The first responsibility of a federal government is the protection and care of its citizens. Infrastructure and social programs are useless if you cannot defend your land and citizens. Not to say they are not important. Just to say that you can't say you will do one without the other. The new century, or at least the way the 2020's are shaping up suggests that we have underspent, and more importantly let our production capabilities atrophy in a dangerous way. What we really need to do is develop domestic capability, but our federal government seems to prefer outsourcing to potential threats such as communist china than developing skills because of fear of domestic unionization. Go figure.

Our leaders are corrupt and stupid. Apparently the National Party thinks that the entire state of South Australia doesn't need fresh water, so that it can be handed to farming interests which are overseas owned and profited. Luckily, wars have a good way to solve this kind of corruption. We ask those responsible if they want a blindfold or not.

Japan can never use it's full forces due to threat of nearby enemies. Any force commitment Australia made to a Japanese war front would also protect it from their only potential alternative threats (eg Indonesia). Unless you're worried about penguin invasion, that is.

@demun6065 Historically they were fanatical fighters, almost on an operational par with the Australian soldiers who had a definite physical advantage of size, fitness and better logistics. Australians have a great reputation for morale, commitment, training, bravery and toughness going back to the 19th century Boer Wars, let alone their actions in France and Gallipoli in WW1, or Egypt and New Guinea in WW2. But I wouldn't be claiming any huge advantage on commitment. Not too many other nations could have kamikaze pilots, or soldiers who would commit hara-kiri rather than surrender. That's the ultimate level of commitment.

That's because we still are fighting it. People think that Australia's military is weak and our population small. But they don't know how many soldiers die, or how many domestically produced tanks are still being destroyed in the Emu wars each week. When will we see help from a "coalition of the willing" or even an acknowledgement of the sacrifice of generations of troops in the world's longest ongoing military conflict?

The 39th Battalion "chocos" or "chocolate soldiers" were basically barely trained militia. They were NOT allowed to be deployed outside of Australia because of an act of parliament. Only the volunteer AIF could be. Therefore, Japan clearly attacked Australia when they entered Australian Territory in New Guinea. (let alone bombed Broome, Darwin etc). Australia only granted New Guinea independence in 1975. Historical facts guys.

Probably only the US could manage a successful invasion of Australia in a period under 3 or 4 years, and they would likely still be fighting guerrillas. China or Russia couldn't at all. The distances are too great for their logistics.

@antonioblackfox erm. nope. Milne Bay, Kokoda, Buna? Australia got invaded in New Guinea (then effectively a semi autonomous Australian province). Australia held that region, and repulses multiple waves of invasion forces, while simultaneously aiding the British war effort in Europe, North Africa and Singapore. I dunno where you got the idea that the commonwealth were "all pushed out". Australia delivered the first military defeats of Japan in World War 2 without any external help.

@Bullet-Tooth-Tony- Australia also has a strong domestic arms industry and a far higher ownership rate of domestic firearms than most of the world thinks, mostly in equivalent military grade cartridges like .223 (5.56 Nato) and .308 (7.62 Nato).

Technically New Guinea was sovereign Australian territory during WW2 which is why the 39th Battalion Australian Militiamen could serve there. They have a historical nickname which I will post as a seperate response. it might ring you tube's alarm bells. historical revisionism at its finest.

You have to take into account Demographics and Resources not just populations. Japan has amongst the oldest population demographics globally and almost no oil, coal or gas reserves. Just saying 127m versus 27m doesn't remotely represent capacity. Plus there are other strategic issues - nearby threats, distance to travel to fight. Honestly neither would be capable of a meaningful blow on the other in the short term, and in the longer term without external aid the greater Japanese economic and production capacity is basically irrelevant without trade partners for resources. So you either have to say longer term Australia wins purely based on domestic resources, or you have to consider geopolitics which is outside scope. At best short term miniscule victory for Japan, unless one side or the other completely mismanages its forces.

Erm, Australia has enough domestic oil and gas to be self sufficient in a ration situation, and also has one of the largest known onshore oil and gas reserves in the world in the Beetaloo basin. So basically the answer to that is, key resources running out? Several millenia for any domestic use, even on wartime footing of oil, gas, iron ore, coal, uranium, aluminum, copper, zinc etc.
