  1. Realistically it's a strong number for a nation that is under no direct military threats and has an underperforming economy. It can still be argued they have the world's second strongest navy. Russia a threat? Get real! They'll be tied up with Ukraine until 2030 the way they're going, and I cannot see them getting a win even then. And China is the other side of the world. Kind of like Taiwan it needs to spend enough to make it look like it is making the effort for its allies, but really needs to use that budget elsewhere. These numbers prove that is the British thinking. In Taiwan's case that is making itself so essential to other nations through the "silicon shield" that other nations will step in to defend it. In Britain's case it is to spend money on fixing it's economy and investing in future technology and manufacturing. Right now it's got two successful industries, or really one, because they're rolled together. Financial services and tax evasion. Britain's manufacturing, energy security, food security and resource security are all sub-par. This is where the money really needs to be spent in the next 5 years - fixing the economic drivers whilst there is no direct threat..
