  1. Actually, skip 9-11. You're talking nearly twice as many US deaths in a single day if a Gerald Ford Carrier gets sunk than died on D-Day. And we know how many movies got made about how much of a massive sacrifice that was - the legacy is still driving movies almost 80 years later. (Although it was still less than half what Australia lost in a Single day at Fromelles in WW1). Asking questions of how public opinion could deal with that is absolutely a legitimate concern. One Gerald Ford downed is more losses than 20 years of Afghanistan, or 8 years of the Iraq wars too.
