@BlazinRican1000 there is no conscription or compulsory military service in Australia. We didn't even use Conscription in WW1. The population voted it down in a referendum. WW2 was a little bit different. There was a call up for 3 months of military service for all men aged over 21 who were not married but they could not leave Australia (basically to train a ready reserve of soldiers for the defence of the country). Where this got messy was that it got expanded to 18-35's in 1942. Fair enough, Australia was under threat. But... Papua New Guinea was part of Australia... and the Japanese landed there. Will post the next relevant bit as a seperate post as it may get blocked if someone conflates historical terms with today's identity politics....

Part II Quote: "Volunteers with the Australian Army scorned CMF conscripts as "chocolate soldiers", or "ch*ckos", because they were believed to melt under the conditions of battle. However, CMF Militia units fought under difficult conditions and suffered extremely high casualties during 1942, in slowing the Japanese advance on the Kokoda Track in New Guinea. New Guinea was then an Australian territory." The supposedly "melt under pressure" Militia however were the first soldiers to meet the Japanese and held strong, even in the face of over 5 to 1 odds, with enormous disadvantages in equipment and supplies. Especially the boys from the 39th Battalion, who blocked the advance of the cream of the Japanese military for over a month along the Kokoda Trail and saved Port Moresby from Japanese conquest.

The height is obviously an issue on a much taller vehicle. Having owned solid axle 4wds and independent suspension 4wd's both have their advantages. Overall "posing flex" the Solid Axle wins, but dynamically, once diff locks are added the difference is far smaller. Independent suspension combined with difflocks often lets you lift a wheel over obstacles rather than dropping you in them and tying your car in knots. Watch the chassis flex on the Unimog if you don't believe me...
