  1. Saibai, Aubusi and Boigu Islands are all part of Queensland, and are amongst the most northern islands that are considered Australian. They're much closer to Papua New Guinea than Australia. After we granted independence to Papua New Guinea (or as we mostly say PNG) there's a special territorial zoning for Torres Strait Islanders to allow indigenous people to move within the region across borders. If you hear the phrase ATSI it means Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. It means that all these groups are considered Australian Indigenous people.

  2. Much of the coastline there is like that. Big cliffs to the water, huge drop to rocks or a beach you can't get to. Mostly though it's rocks. Because you have the Southern Ocean with powerful wind and waves the whole time, so any sand gets carried away. Officially, we have to call it Great Australian Bight of the South Indian Ocean now, because of some treaty or something. But it's a worldwide ocean that just gets the most vicious weather from the cold of Antarctica, and WE still call it Southern Ocean, Great Australian Bight and of course Bass Strait separating Victoria and Tasmania Lots of caves in the area too. The spray from the waves hitting the rocks erodes them, plus they erode internally from the Great Artesian Basin too.
