Australia has kinships with NZ obviously, and Britain, Ireland (lots of Irish convicts), Scotland and Wales too, the Canadians, and USA, and Turkey (because of Gallipoli), and France (mostly from WW1, but also very much due to early exploration), India (Cricket and the empire), South Africa (Cricket, Rugby and the Empire), Indonesia (we championed the creation of Indonesia, and also because Bali), Thailand, Greece (huge Greek Community), Italy (post war migration, Snowy Mountains Hydro), Vietnam (boat refugees from Vietnam war), Sri Lanka (again, boat refugees). We also have a very large Chinese community going back to the 1850's. Parts of Australia also have huge German, Jewish, Russian, Hungarian, Serbian and Malay communities. The Barossa Valley and also the Adelaide Hills have a huge German community. St Kilda and Balaclava have a huge Jewish Community. Broome is an absolute cultural melting pot. We also have lots of smaller minority groups we've taken in, with various levels of success. but I'm sure they'll come around to our way of life eventually.

  4. Sydney has more Middle Eastern influence, despite a large Lebanese community in Melbourne. Probably more Asian influence, but wouldn't be too sure of that. Springvale, Footscray or Richmond might suggest otherwise. Not so centralised perhaps? Italian and Greek influence, definitely in favour of Melbourne. Sydney people are definitely defensive of their city too, but I agree more people in Melbourne seem to care about the culture wars between the two.
