What we are seeing more and more is housing built without regards to the climate for the benefit of either the property developer (or the local council) to squeeze as much housing on the land as possible. So big eaves gone, verandahs gone... Even when this breaches federal building standards. The NSW Government infamously overturned sensible building planning in Western Sydney to stop people using dark/black roofing material in an area that exceeds 120 Farehnheit during summer. Utter madness. Even greater madness, the same government actively encouraging high density housing development in floodplains that are regularly underwater. But I guess the property development lobby is more important than people's comfort and safety. ALWAYS check council flood maps when buying a house in Australia.
