Closest way to get to Uluru from the Gold Coast in a standard road car (as opposed to a heavily prepared 4 wheel drive) is probably head north to Rocky and then head inland. That will still see you driving 3200 km (2000 miles) including over 1000 kilometres of isolated dirt roads. To stay on tarmac (bitumen) the whole way, you'll be adding another 1000 kilometers to that for sure. You could seriously be facing a 3000 mile trip to be able to stay on paved roads. People still have no clue on the sheer size of Australia. Queensland and Western Australia are each bigger than Alaska, and the Northern Territory is only 20% smaller than Alaska. The drive from the Gold Coast to Uluru (involving driving through Queensland and Northern Territory together) means that you would be travelling in an area 5 times the size of Texas or 7 times the size of Iraq.
