America and DuPont's lobbying to criminalize hemp (to benefit their polyester and rayon) are a lot of the reason why hemp is not so common now, and why America started the whole war on drugs thing. Refer to (lol) the "Reefer Madness" propaganda based movie for the whole cultural link. Hemp is a rather important historical textile, and I'm sure you've heard about the first American flags, or even the original US constitution being on hemp. Or "Hemp for Victory", an American WW2 pro hemp propaganda film. Hemp was critical to the pre steamship era for sails and rigging. Hemp was so different to what cannabis is today that it's like comparing light beer with bourbon whiskey. Also, Pitcairn and Norfolk Islands have a really really interesting history. Mutiny on the Bounty and all that. Norfolk was run as a small independent place with its external policies (eg defence, migration etc) run by Australia but sadly due to local corruption and economic decline meant it got absorbed by Australia to feed its populace and provide basic services.
