Driving from Austria at -20 C and watching the snow ploughs actually drifting sideways in the snow having a laugh... and crash after crash in London at -3 C gives you an idea of how much chaos it can cause. England is really far from prepared either.

The Blue Mountains are certainly high enough to cop snow during winter, and even outside of winter occasionally. Katoomba, Lithgow (and further west Mudgee and Bathurst) can honestly be quite cold places despite their latitude. Snow is not ridiculously rare there. But we did see a really rapid change of temperature some people were not ready for. Temperatures dropped 10 degrees Celsius (or 18 Fahrenheit) in an hour when the cold snap hit, and wind chills were around 20 Fahrenheit across much of Western Sydney when this happened. Given a winter night in Sydney is normally about 50 Fahrenheit, and a winter day in Sydney is usually closer to 70 Fahrenheit, this was a shock, but far from unheard of.
