  1. Sadly animals suffer for our conflicts. I'm sure tens or even hundreds of thousands of Russian dogs either died from exposure or starved to death during the great patriotic war, along with those 27 million humans. Was it immoral? Definitely. But were pretty much all nations actions immoral during those times? Absolutely. While I cannot condone it, at rates of 16 dogs to destroy 12 tanks? Tanks that could have easily killed hundreds of soldiers, and then indirectly hundreds or thousands of human lives through starvation, exposure, and then thousands more through deliberate deaths through neglect, slavery and death camps? I understand, without condoning, the need for their service and sacrifice... just like I do those millions of Russian dead who were really the majority of those responsibly for us defeating the Nazis.

  2. Don't get me wrong I'd rather kill a person than a dog, and both are sometimes a risk in my job. Maybe I just don't like humans, or maybe I committed my best years to raising, loving and trusting my dogs in a way that I could not trust the humans whose lives I shared. Yet we have evolved a sense that human lives are of a higher value than those of other animals. Our legal systems the world over reinforce this belief. He's not wrong, much as it might disgust us - it is far too easy, too convenient, to justifiable for us to betray that trust. That's why this is such a poignant topic.

  4. Anyone who has ever eaten meat has to agree on some level. Anyone who has been a general in an army recognizes the same fact also appliers for humans.

  5. Is it much different than a drill sergeant training thousands of young men to die in combat? Anyone training people for combat, knowing the likely outcome, would have to be traumatized.
